What is PBS?
PBS stands for Positive Behavior Support. PBS is a broad range of whole group (systemic) and individualized strategies for achieving important social and learning outcomes while preventing problem behavior.
PBS clearly defines universal behavioral expectations and creates a common vocabulary for all students, teachers, and parents to use across all situations and locations.
Wyman has three universals: Be respectful, be responsible, and be your best. These behavioral universals are introduced and reinforced in may ways:
- Expectations for student behavior are defined by a building based team with input from the staff.
- We try to implement behavioral supports consistently by staff and administration.
- Appropriate student behavior is taught.
- Positive behaviors are publicly acknowledged.
- Problem behaviors have clear consequences.
- Student behavior is monitored and staff receive regular feedback.
- Behavioral supports are implemented at school-wide, specific setting, classroom and individual levels.
- Strategies taught are designed to meed the needs of all students.
Most students will respond to these universal behavioral supports. A small percentage may still have difficulty and will need attention in a small group or individual setting. Strategies that may be used in these small group or individual settings include but are not limited to:
- Social skill training
- Self-management
- Mentors/Check-ins
- Peer tutoring/Peer networking
- Academic support.
