Social Science Course Descriptions

8th Grade American History

Eighth grade American History is a survey course covering American History from early exploration to the Civil War, both the United States and Missouri Constitutions, and various aspects of economics. Emphasis will be placed on the following:  

  • Cause and effect of major events.
  • Ability to place events in chronological order.
  • Develop students' critical thinking skills.
  • Understand strengths and weaknesses of our nation.
  • Current events, comparing past with present and future.


American History/Government & Economics

Presents basic information needed to understand our nation's government and economy as well as its application to our nation's history. Students will develop the ability to think critically, to identify and understand both our nation's strengths and weaknesses and its successes and failures. What we learn can help us face our future with confidence. The course will begin with the causes of the Civil War and continue to current times and contemporary issues.


Geography

This class begins with the basics of U.S. geography and continues with the cultures and environments of the rest of the world. Emphasis is placed on: U.S. capitals and cities, and Eastern and Western Hemisphere cultures and environments.


Current Events

This course will include a study of current events from the local, state, national, and international levels. The study will be accomplished from a historical, political, economic, and geographical viewpoint. Students will be able to better understand their role as citizens, and the influence they have on and in society.
