Spelling in 3rd Grade
Each week students will have 10-20 words on their weekly spelling list. The first five words (numbers 1-5) on the test will be the first five words on that week’s spelling list. These words are called our Word Wall Words and students will be responsible for knowing how to spell these words correctly for the rest of the year. They will be placed on our word wall and will be reviewed throughout the year. This list is made up of words that are frequently misspelled or are necessary comprehension words for third grade.
The next five words (numbers 6-10) on the test could be ANY of the words remaining on the list. Students will not know which words I will choose but should be able to spell any of them using the spelling patterns found in the word wall words for the week. For example, if a student knows how to spell the word because he/she should be able to use the spelling rhyme –ause to help them spell the word pause. These are called “transfer words” because students should be able to transfer their knowledge of how to spell one word and use it to spell many others.
The last five words (numbers 11-15) on the test could be any of the words that we have had in past weeks. Hopefully this new way of doing spelling will help our kids develop their ability to spell new words rather than just memorize a list of words.
